Which Scenario Are You In?
If you searched for a ricoh printer for home use, then saw used ricoh copiers for sale, and then ended up comparing a matthews inkjet printer with a dtf printer buy or a diy a3 uv printer, you probably have one of four different print problems. I do not think there is one correct answer. There is only a correct category for your workflow.
I manage purchasing for a 30-person brand and packaging firm. I have tracked equipment, consumables, service invoices and rework costs for six years. My bias is practical: pick the process that lowers total cost of ownership without making quality a bet. My point here is to separate four common searches and give you a path for each one.
1. Paper Documents for a Home Office or Small Team
If your real workload is applications, school forms, shipping labels and occasional color documents, a Ricoh A4 MFP or a small office printer represents a simpler budget item than a used production copier. A home use buyer should not buy a used Ricoh copier just because the label price is low. Those machines are built for high monthly cycles, and an idle copier can still accumulate service costs through fuser wear, paper feed parts and firmware updates.
If you print under 500 pages per month, choose by total cost per page, not purchase price. Ask the dealer for the cost per page including drum, toner and service. If the dealer cannot produce a page cost, that is a red flag. In my own price comparisons, the machine with the cheapest label price usually became the most expensive in year two because toner and service were separate.
There is nothing glamorous about this advice. Sometimes the most efficient answer is a printer. Not an all-in-one, not a network copier, just a printer. What I mean is this: every extra feature on a machine is an extra part that can fail, especially at lower home or small office volume.

Used Ricoh copiers for sale become attractive when you have several employees printing continuously, scanning contracts or producing internal documents. The phrase is not necessarily a red flag. Used office copiers can run for years if the meter is honest and the parts supply is stable.
Here is something vendors will not tell you: the duty cycle listed in the brochure is a burst limit, not a suggestion to run the machine at maximum every month. If a used copier quote looks too good, ask for the average monthly page history, not the theoretical maximum. That number tells you how the previous owner treated the machine.
For a used Ricoh copier, I put five lines in my spreadsheet:
- Purchase or lease transfer price
- Delivery, installation and training
- Service contract or per-page click cost
- Consumables and parts that the service contract excludes
- Expected removal or end-of-life cost
That list is not exhaustive. It is enough to show why a $1,500 used copier can be either a good deal or a $4,000 mistake. The difference is in the supporting costs, not in the machine photo.
3. The DTF Printer Buy Decision: Transfer Film Means a More Complete System
The DTF printer buy conversation comes from apparel decorators who want control over custom transfers. DTF uses film with a powdered adhesive that is cured before pressing. You are not buying one machine; you are buying a small production line with ink, PET film, adhesive powder, heat, curing and regular nozzle cleaning. Many online deals show only the print engine. By the time you add the rest, the entry price changes.
Here is the best cost question: how many transfers do you actually produce per week? If it is around 20 shirts or less, outsourcing the film to a transfer supplier is often cheaper. If you scale past 100 weekly transfers, owning a DTF system may pay off. At least, that has been my experience with small apparel orders and short production runs. The middle range depends on your reject rate, not just the printer price.
Color quality is another reason to separate home and office printers from DTF. Most garment logos need a branded color repeated on multiple fabric colors. The usual industry benchmark for critical brand colors is Delta E below 2, measured under standardized lighting (Source: Pantone color matching guidelines). A DTF print's color can drift because of ink saturation, film type, powder layer, pressure and temperature. If a seller doesn't offer a color test, treat the first order as your test.
4. Rigid Substrates, Small Products or Product Coding: UV and Industrial Inkjet
The fourth bucket is where the Matthews inkjet printer and the DIY A3 UV printer searches usually land. The Matthews name is common in industrial marking and coding: date codes, labels, logos on packaging or parts. That is not the same as a desktop document printer. The decision there is about line speed, printhead cleaning, ink adhesion and downtime. I would not buy an industrial coding system without a service plan and a spare printhead cost quote.
The DIY A3 UV printer case is different. A UV printer cures ink with ultraviolet light, allowing prints on rigid materials. Some small-business owners look at a DIY A3 UV machine because it appears cheaper than a production UV printer. In my experience, the apparent savings disappear after substrate waste, failed curing tests and replacement parts. I am not a print chemist, so I cannot tell you which ink will bond to every plastic, glass or metal sample. From a cost perspective, ask for an adhesion matrix before buying. If the seller cannot provide substrate results, your first test batch becomes your laboratory.
A practical checkpoint is final print file resolution. 300 DPI at final size is still a common commercial print starting point. If an A3 UV demo only looks good from two meters away, ask for a closer look at edge detail and fine text.
For small production runs of rigid items, I believe in workflow efficiency before hardware. The businesses that make money are those that standardize on a small set of substrates and ink profiles. They produce samples, then repeat the same print recipe. A DIY machine can become an efficient tool if you treat it as a contained project. Just do not treat it as the same purchasing category as a production floor industrial system.
Which Scenario Are You In?
Use the substrate and monthly volume as your guide:
- Plain paper only, under roughly 500 pages per month: stay with a home or small office MFP. The Ricoh printer for home use search is valid if you need dependable A4 printing and scanning.
- Many users, high monthly office prints, scanning and finishing: look at used Ricoh copiers for sale, but calculate service and per-page costs before signing.
- Custom garments, short-run transfers, multiple colors at low quantity: consider the DTF route or a transfer supplier, depending on volume.
- Rigid containers, packaging codes, product labels or sample parts: compare industrial inkjet or UV systems. For low volumes, outsourcing is often cheaper than a DIY A3 UV printer.
No machine gets my sign-off until I understand what it costs per accepted unit. Rework is part of the cost. A cheap printer can still be expensive if the output arrives late, fails adhesion or misses the color target. In the end, any of these purchases can pay for itself if volumes are right. None of them is universally the best. Stop comparing price tags and start comparing total delivered unit cost after consumables, spoilage, service and downtime. That is the spreadsheet I use. It has saved me from buying the cheapest printer, the cheapest copier and the cheapest transfer system, year after year.
