For most print shops, the answer is straightforward: buy a Ricoh color printer for the jobs that have to be right, and add a UV printer only when customers bring substrates that toner can't touch. Most shops run that in a month or two.
I'm not saying every cheap machine fails. I'm saying you have to calculate the risk. A 5% difference in failure rate is not a rounding error. It's the difference between a promotion and a redo.
When my advice doesn't apply
My advice has limits, and I'd be lying if I didn't admit them. If you print 30 pages a week, a Ricoh color printer is overkill. If you need food packaging prototypes tomorrow, a UV printer is non-negotiable. If your business model is built on being the lowest bidder, price might genuinely be the priority. I'm not going to pretend that never works.
The point is not "always buy Ricoh." The point is to make the decision with your eyes open. The next time someone sends you a quote, look past the bottom line. Ask about printhead life. Ask about response time. Ask to see a test print. Then ask yourself: what does this machine cost after the first year? That's the question I'd want you to answer before you buy.
